Sensor Processor

From raw materials to SPM assembly.

The Sensor Processing Module (SPM) monitors 3 components of the electric motorcycle:

  • 1. Battery Management System.
  • 2. Battery Pack Hall Sensor.
  • 3. The rear wheel brake rotor tabs.

For each system component monitored the SPM provides near real time data for the total pack voltage from the BMS, total pack current from the pack Hall Sensor and vehicle speed from the rotor tabs. The SPM has bootloader functionality to allow firmware updates over a CAN2.0 network via the TALON.

Prototyping and fabrication process:

This is the first prototype of the Sensor Processor Module circuit board. It includes signal filtering and conversion for interface from the raw Variable Reluctance Sensor output (40vpp) to PIC (TTL).

Below is the revised SPM board excluding the VRS signal filtering and conversion circuitry, which as shown below, has been moved into the VR Sensor housing.

Black Feather Systems modified the Variable Reluctance Sensor to allow direct interface with a Programmable Interface Controller at TTL levels. This modification allows the VR sensor to be utilized across multiple PIC platforms without the need to introduce additional circuitry into the host application.
